Walk For Cancer
Judy Preston's Page
Hello!! My name is Judy Preston and I live in Russell, Manitoba. Each year I participate in the Annual
Walk for Cancer held across Canada. My reason? It's simple, my sister Janice lost her battle with
cancer. Since then I have made it my goal to walk and raise funds for Cancer research. My sister was
my best friend, she was my inspiration to keep on going. Cancer can be beat! Let's all remember our
loved ones and their courageous fight against the disease. Thank you for stopping by!

Judy, helping out in the "Our Troops - We Will
Remember 2007" campaign. This is one VERY
busy lady, willing to help out at any time!
When one thinks of Judy Preston, one thinks of a woman with a heart of gold. She is so willing to help
out, she is very involved with the "Walk for Cancer" in Manitoba and she is wonderful at her scrap
booking.
A few years ago she lost Janice, her dear sister. Janice lost her battle with cancer. Since then Judy
has made it a priority to do as much as she can with her life and in helping out in raising funds for
cancer research. She is also a ChemoAngel with www.chemoangels.com This organization helps
bring smiles to those going through cancer treatment.
Yes, Judy Preston is one full of energy. Despite the aches and pains, she wastes no time in life
grumbling about them. She keeps active, has a great spirit and is a super role model for all the young
today!
Way to go Judy!
Your friend,
Dorothy

The Weekend to End Breast Cancer 60km walk seemed so daunting to me the first year I thought of
taking part, I did not think this old body could do it and it took me several months to decide that YES I
was going to do it or at least try. I had made a promise to my sister, Janice before she passed that I
walking. In order to walk the 60km in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer is to raise a minimum of
$2,000.00 and then to drive to Winnipeg (which is 4 hours from Russell one way), go through
registration and then be prepared to walk and walk and walk. 2006, was my first year and before I had
even taken a step, I had already signed up for 2007. The walk was long, grueling and by the end of day
one I hurt and had blisters but it was also very inspiring, fun and something I would not miss. By the
end of day two, my body was hurting bad but when I crossed the finish line, I felt so proud of myself and
I knew my sister would have been so proud of me. Among the many people cheering us on when we
crossed the finish line, the one that moved me the most was a 6 year old Down Syndrome girl (who
obviously was going through chemo because she had a little bald head) who was trying to give feeling
sorry for myself because my body hurt and I had a few blisters and this poor wee thing was fighting for
her life and still out there giving high fives. After I went in and collected my shirt for finishing, I went back
out and stood with this wee girl and helped her get her high fives. Most people would rub her head and
she did not like that. It turns out her Mommy had walked the two days too. In 2006 I raised $4500.00.
In 2007 I had to work way harder to raise my minimum as our little town was swamped with fundraising
for the pool; for the MS walk (which I also took part in) and for the Relay for Life (which I also took part in
as I am a colon cancer survivor). I did a lot of things to raise money: garage sales; hot dog sales;
family fun carnival; breast cancer items sale as various stores in Russell and Swan River and by email.
I raised just over $2800.00 this year. I trained a lot more this year, doing 6km and 12 km walks
alternating days and it paid off because this year I had so much more fun; less blisters and my body
did not hurt like last year. I had three walking partners most of the time and we had a blast, keeping
each other going. We were smarter by treating any hot spots on our feel before blisters formed and
stopped more often to stretch and rest. Again before I even took one step in the 2007 walk, I had signed
up for 2008.
The 2007 walk was more significant to me too as I celebrate 40 years with having and being operated
by a pacemaker. Yup 40 years ago I was not supposed to live and here I am going strong.

2 - Ahh.....this isn't so hard! What a beautiful sight! All those little Canadian flags ready for me to
cut out.
3 - Yes, all done!! Look at how well designed some of the backs of the Posties are, gosh I sure
can't wait for the troops to receive them!
little posties are taped, cut, signed, and sent overseas to our troops who have chosen to serve
their country. Judy's Dad and othe family members served in previous wars so she knows how
difficult it can be on both the troops and their families. Thank you for all your fine work!! Keep on
taping.............
